Shopify Theme Development

Storefronts engineered for speed, conversion, and craft.

Custom Shopify themes built on OS 2.0 performant, accessible, instrumented, and ready to scale. Headless when it earns its keep, native when it doesn't. Shipped by senior engineers, not template-shop juniors.

The work

Your theme is the storefront. It deserves senior engineering.

The Shopify theme market is full of templates dressed up as bespoke work. Most of them collapse the first time you ask them to do something genuinely brand-specific.

Seedcms builds custom themes from scratch on Shopify OS 2.0, with a component library that grows with you, instrumentation baked in from day one, and performance budgets that aren't quietly missed.

Headless when the brand needs it. Native when it doesn't. The right choice, not the trendy one.

What's included.

What a Shopify Theme Development engagement covers the scope, the deliverables, and the operational reality of shipping each piece.

01

OS 2.0 theme builds

Custom Liquid + JSON templates with section + block architecture that gives your marketing team real control without breaking the design system.

  • Section + block architecture
  • JSON templates & metaobjects
  • Design tokens via CSS variables
  • Storybook + handoff docs
02

Component & block libraries

A typed, reusable component library that lets your team ship new pages and campaigns without engineering tickets. Built to outlive the launch.

  • Atomic component design
  • Theme settings + presets
  • Marketing-controllable blocks
  • Version-controlled tokens
03

Performance + accessibility

95+ Lighthouse, WCAG AA, real Core Web Vitals under load. Not as a benchmark to game, as a baseline the brand can rely on.

  • 95+ Lighthouse perf score
  • WCAG AA accessibility
  • Real-world CWV monitoring
  • Performance budgets in CI

Our approach.

How we run a Shopify Theme Development engagement. Sequenced so each phase de-risks the next.

Step 01

Discover

Audit current theme (if any), brand system, growth surface, technical constraints. Output: a spec that tells us what to build and why.

Step 02

Design

UX + UI in Figma, motion in Lottie/Framer where it earns the bandwidth. Components defined before pages so the system holds when marketing takes over.

Step 03

Build

Senior Liquid + frontend engineering. PR-based, code-reviewed, instrumented. Component library shipped alongside the theme so iteration is cheap forever.

Step 04

QA

Cross-browser, cross-device, accessibility audit, performance benchmarking under realistic data load. SEO checks. Stakeholder UAT on real content.

Step 05

Launch

Coordinated launch window. Soft-launch traffic ramp where possible. Monitoring live from minute one performance, errors, conversion.

Step 06

Iterate

Themes are living code. We stay on for the first month of optimization at minimum longer when you want us to.

Stack we trust.

Honest answers.

The questions we get about Shopify Theme Development before brands sign. If yours isn't here, ask us directly.

Custom theme or modified template?

For any brand serious about growth, custom. Templates are fine for proof-of-concept and stage-one stores; they break the moment your brand has a real design system or your marketing team wants meaningful section control.

We'll be honest about which side of the line your business is on. If template + customization is the right call, we'll tell you.

Headless or native OS 2.0?

A real decision, made deliberately. Headless earns its complexity when you need extreme performance, multi-channel content reuse, or composable architecture. Native OS 2.0 wins on speed-to-market, lower engineering overhead, and editor experience for non-technical teams.

Most brands are better served by a well-built OS 2.0 theme. We'll make the call with you in week one.

Can you guarantee performance?

We guarantee a top of the line theme and a performance budget that holds in CI. Real-world Core Web Vitals depend on third-party scripts and traffic mix we'll instrument so you can see exactly where time is being spent.

What happens after launch?

We hand off with full documentation, a Storybook of components, runbooks, and a knowledge-transfer week with your team. Most clients move to a monthly retainer for ongoing development and optimization but the codebase is yours, fully owned, never locked.

Can your theme work with our existing apps?

Yes. We audit your app stack in Discover and design around it. Where an app's chrome conflicts with the brand, we'll often rebuild the surface using native Shopify primitives (Metaobjects, Functions) and remove the dependency.

Will the theme work for our other brands / regional sites?

Yes, if scoped that way. Multi-brand themes use shared component libraries and per-brand design tokens. Multi-region sites use Shopify Markets natively. We'll architect for whichever future state you've signed up for.
